Section A Page 4 The Daily Sentinel Sunday May 3 1992 Opinion Local Opinion The wood chip mill question: are there any easy answers? The wood chip mill con troversy seems to be coming to a bead finally Within weeks the Tennessee Valley Authority is scheduled to release the first draft of its Environmental Impact Study the document supposed to help board of directors decide whether or not to issue permits for the four wood chip mills proposed in the Bridgeport area It has been well over a year since the wood chip mills took center stage in the Tennessee Valley The controversy has not subsided in the past few months time spent by TV A researching the subject and com piling what has to be one of the most anxiously awaited reports of all time Instead the controversy has grown more complicated The environmentalists seem to want to ban not only wood chip mills but clearcutting and logging in general the forestry companies want free reign to do whatever they want with our forests landowners want the government telling them what to do with their trees a government regulat ory agency to do? TVA is caught in the middle of this one and obvious The EIS has been delayed time and time again Why? Insiders at the agency say war ring factions within TVA are battling it out over what recommendations the study will make no easy answer to the question TVA has been asked to answer Do we give in to our environmental concern and start using the federal government to control private property use? Or do we respect the Constitution and allow land owners to manage their property the way they see fit? There may be a middle ground in there somewhere but going to take a lot of hard work and a good bit of compromising on all sides to reach it BYNUM Sentinel Staff Write Us Letters To The Editor may address any topic or area of interest as long as they are not libelous and are not specific complaints against a private person or business Please try to keep letters to a maximum 300 words in length To avoid mistakes it also helps if the letter is either written legibly or typed Letters must be signed and should include an address and daytime telephone number The address and telephone number are for verification purposes Only the name and town of residence will be published In the interest of fairness and open debate anonymous letters will not be published We reserve the right to edit all letters submitted for publication Views expressed in letters may not necessarily be the opinions of this newspaper or its staif Please send your comments to Letters To The Editor The Daily Sentinel PO Box 220 Scottsboro AL 35768 Ljvf wASimwis swcomr suckstomr Jfe AGOW? Many thanks to Mr WJ Museler Mr ord McCuiston Mr Danny Potts and all the Bellefonte employ ees who not only helped financially but who also gave of their time and talents It was sometimes difficult to determine who was having the most fun the workers or the children We also want to thank the various individuals from the Sheriffs office Jaycees from Jackson County the Citizens United for a Better Bridge port Pat Smith and volunteers from Northeast State Jr College Mr Ken neth Harding and the teachers from North Jackson High School and others who donated money food shirts or other items to be used in the Special Olympics The coverage by Marc Golden of The Daily Sentinel Larry Glass of the North Jackson Progress Ron Livengood from WKEA and Mr Paul Allred was wonderful Thanks to all of you for promoting our special children and helping them to have a great day! Last but certainly not least of all we want to express appreciation to the parents of our special children for sharing them with us They truly are and we cherish each and every one of them DIANNE GRIDER Interim Special Education Coordinator Jackson County Takes issue with an editorial EDITOR DAILY SENTINEL: I must take issue with Byron editorial of 29 April advocating the use of political cam paign signs along the highway Although I share his enthusiasm for the election season I feel these signs are an eyesore not a in as Mr Woodfin calls them Would he also consider the piles of cans bot tles and fast food wrappers behind them a study in art? Perhaps a pop artist like Andy Warhol may have agreed but not the average citizen concerned with keeping Jackson County clean and litter free The proliferation of signs rather than being a sign of the and of a candidate could also be considered just an indication of the amount of money he she ra their supporters are willing to put into the campaign Should we be influenced only by the rich as seems to be the trend in our national campaigns? I Believe this money can be better spent by putting it into factual and informative advertising in the media Although Sarah Betty anticipated objections to this editor ial are probably founded as mine are on a desire to keep our area clean Tony Camp would probably object on a more concrete basis The fact is these campaign signs on state and federal right of ways are against the law and it costs the Highway Department taxpayer dollars to clean than up a point which the editorial misses completely Mr enthusiasm fra the campaign season could be better directed by having The Daily Sen tinel provide more complete and fre quent coverage of the candidates with factual data on their qualifica tions and stands on issues so die vot ers can make a better informal choice at election time GENE MURDOCK Scottsboro 701 Payna Hwy Scottsboro AL 35768 Phone (205) 253 1020 Associated Press Award Winner Sentinel ESTABLISHED 1M7 VOLUME XXV NUMBER 609 Alabama Press Association Editor and Bitty Cornwell Jr Advertising Kirby (USPS 490 680) Ganeral Manager Anita Bynum Composition Manager aya McBride Managing Editor Byron Woodfin Gradation Manager Hrtvn WIBmon Pubfahad My Tussdty trough riday and Sanday mmngi by Scoabora feattapm Inc My JL CccmU JL Pmikit Tba My SarM a anaMor fa Th Pwgwsw fat Th Jbducc Cony SrM odTh SartfrMg Scond Ox Postag Pad Scctsba AL 35M Rak 3 Mortfs 1L0Q 6 Urfs SXOO 1 Tw Ox gt Carty Rm Uxbs 324 50 Mctdi 1 Yrt3M POSTMASTERS Send AddmCh iTeTh My Sertn(7C1 ft Pyn Hay Safer ALSSU Th My SKfeiiwrm igit si npcduaor rti ptMcfea of ri am and dteg warts nmpspw To mdi Ooteoa phon Ad orw fcparwa Ofc Hxt Moray tra riday 5 AM to PW Cradnxi phon epn vid 5 PU Mon and Saaday 1 AM tO AM Naa phon opw rsi I PM.
